Gharghar Repotting Workshop

The following is a progression series of a Sandarac Gum Tree - Tetraclinis Articulata (Gharghar) which was purchased from a local nursury and after 3 years of training was repotted in a bonsai pot.

2005

2006

2007

During a workshop session led by Dr. Alfred Grech, Claude Sciberras, the owner repotted the tree into a proper bonsai pot. The first step was to make the soil mix which included, grit, sharp sand, peat, compost, some local soil and bone meal.

The pot was then prepared with mesh over the drainage holes A layer of gravel was put at the bottom of the pot to aid drainage and then a layer of soil mix was poured over the gravel
The tree was then removed from the training pot After a quick inspection of the
state of the root ball work started on the removal of the excess soil since the training pot was particularly deep
After discussing the front of the pot and the tree and the alignment of the tree, the tree was placed in the pot.

The tree was then secured with
wire which was prepared in
advance
Once the tree was secured in position more soil mix was poured into the pot ensuring that there wer no pockets in the soil. This is what the tree looks like now after repotting.

Some Photos from the lecture on repotting. In this series you can see Mr John Grech repotting on of his Ficus Microcarpa trees. Mr. Grech first focused on the different growing media and then gave a practical example of how to repot your tree properly giving you tree the greatest chances of survival.
Repotting started with the preparation of the new pot with the mesh over the drainage holes and a stratum of grit followed by a stratum of soil mix on the bottom of the pot.

Once the pot was ready Mr. Grech eased out the tree from the old pot using a knife to cut around the pot. The next step was to remove a substantial amount of the old soil and trim the roots.

The tree was then secured to the pots with the wire which was passed through the drainage holes. More soil was then put in the pot to cover the root system ensuring that no gaps are left in between the roots. The final result was just great.
